Is There a Minimum Age for Ear Piercing in the UK?
Parents often ask us, “How old does my baby have to be to get their ears pierced?” At SPARKLN, we do not set a fixed minimum age for earlobe piercing. We know that the right time can be a personal decision, and that ear piercing may have cultural or traditional significance for some families.
We do have a recommendation for parents considering baby ear piercing, and we explain our process clearly so you can decide what feels right for your family.
SPARKLN’s recommendation for baby ear piercing
We recommend waiting until your baby has received the vaccinations offered at their first three routine appointments, usually at 8, 12 and 16 weeks. The NHS lists these appointments in its routine vaccination schedule for babies.
This is SPARKLN’s own recommendation about timing. It is not an NHS recommendation about ear piercing, and completing vaccinations does not remove the usual aftercare responsibilities or potential risks associated with a piercing.
Can a baby under four months have their ears pierced?
Yes. We understand that some families choose ear piercing for cultural or traditional reasons, so SPARKLN can provide appointments for babies under four months too.
Before proceeding, we will talk through the additional considerations and potential risks with you. A parent or legal guardian must be present and complete our additional consent form at the appointment before the piercing begins.
Is there a legal minimum age for ear piercing?
There is no national minimum age set for standard earlobe piercing, but local authority licensing conditions may apply and individual providers can set their own age policies. In November 2025, the UK Government said it had no plans to set a national minimum age for body piercing.
That is why it is useful to ask a provider about its own policy and any local requirements that apply. SPARKLN does not set a fixed minimum age for earlobe piercing, and recommends that parents wait until their baby has received the vaccinations offered at the first three routine appointments.
What happens during an at-home appointment?
SPARKLN brings the appointment to your home, so your baby or child can be pierced in familiar surroundings. Our piercers use a sterile, single-use cartridge system. We take time to discuss placement with you before piercing, then provide aftercare guidance and ongoing support.
SPARKLN has carried out more than 1,500 at-home piercing appointments. We provide appointments across London and surrounding areas and Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch and surrounding Dorset areas.
