How to Prepare Your Baby for Ear Piercing: A Step-by-Step Guide

Getting ready for your baby’s first ear piercing can bring a mix of excitement and questions. At SPARKLN, we make the appointment personal and unhurried, visiting you at home and explaining each step. A little preparation can help you feel ready—and you know your baby and their routine best.

1. Choose a time that works for your baby

When booking, think about the parts of the day when your baby is usually settled. If you can, choose a time that fits comfortably around their usual sleep and feeding routine. There’s no need to find a “perfect” time—babies have their own rhythms, and we’ll take things at your baby’s pace.

2. Make a comfortable space at home

We bring the appointment to you, so your family can stay in familiar surroundings. Choose a comfortable place with enough room for you and your baby. A favourite blanket, toy or other familiar comfort can help make the moment feel more like your usual routine.

You don’t need to create a special setup. We’ll talk you through what we need when we arrive.

3. Have your questions ready

It’s completely fine to have questions, whether they’re about the appointment, earring placement or aftercare. You can ask us before the visit or when we arrive. We’ll explain what to expect and discuss placement with you before proceeding.

There’s no need to feel rushed. We want you to feel informed and comfortable with the plan before the piercing begins.

4. Be with your baby throughout

You’ll stay with your baby during the appointment, offering the familiar comfort of a parent or legal guardian. Our piercer will explain each stage and guide you through how to hold or support your baby during the process.

Every baby responds in their own way. We’ll give you time, talk you through the appointment and keep the focus on your baby and your family.

5. Know what to expect afterwards

Before the appointment ends, we’ll explain how to care for your baby’s new piercings and answer your aftercare questions. We check in during the first few days after the appointment, and you can message our dedicated SPARKLN WhatsApp support chat with questions throughout the aftercare process.

A note about age and timing

SPARKLN does not set a fixed minimum age for earlobe piercing. We recommend waiting until your baby has received the vaccinations offered at their first three routine appointments, usually at 8, 12 and 16 weeks. You can view the NHS routine vaccination schedule for babies.

This is SPARKLN’s recommendation about timing, not NHS advice about ear piercing. We can also provide appointments for babies under four months. Before proceeding, we’ll talk through the additional considerations with you. A parent or legal guardian must be present and complete an additional consent form at the appointment.
